With the Olympic Games flying high, Root Sports has hit Rox bottom

Colin D. | August 4, 2012

I can’t say that I have the scoop on television ratings but I know this much: hardly anybody is watching Colorado Rockies games anymore.

The Olympics are in full swing and doing killer evening numbers. By the time the games are over, there will be pre-season NFL football, HBO’s Hard Knocks and the NFL Network to occupy the minds of Denver Sports fans. Fact is, nobody needs Root Sports anymore.

The Rockies aren’t worth watching. And, unless you happen to be one of the five people who enjoys the douche-tastic Dan Patrick Show, there’s nothing else to see on that Network.

Advertisers must be aware of this. It’s hard to imagine how Root sells through their inventory. They must have to practically give it away – or maybe their clients are all stuck in bad contracts they signed back when there was still an ounce of optimism surrounding Colorado baseball. Either way, it’s a safe bet that some of them will be reluctant to come on board next season. If Root loses revenues they may no longer be in a position to secure the Rockies broadcasting rights moving forward.

Root Sports Rocky Mountain would cease to exist if they lost the Rockies deal. They would just go “poof” if another network (like Comcast) were to come along and outbid them for Rockies coverage. It would be a shame to lose Jenny Cavnar.
