The Major League Baseball trade deadline is two weeks away.
Your Colorado Rockies are in third place in their division, trailing the formerly woeful Dodgers by one win and the Arizona Diamond Backs by four.
The prevailing question surrounding the Colorado squad recently has been whether they’ll be “buyers” or “sellers” at the deadline. It would seem as though that issue may be decided by how well they handle their upcoming home stretch.
In ten straight games at Coors Field the Rox face the Cubs, Marlins and Brewers, all of whom are bringing up the rear in their respective divisions. It’s the easiest stretch in Colorado’s season and, if the Rockies were to win at least seven of ten, they could conceivably emerge feeling as though the NL West is winnable. In that case they would be buyers. A starting pitcher would be their obvious priority and they have been loosely tied to Matt Garza.
If, however, they fail to capitalize on the favorable ten-game schedule, they could determine that the post-season is out of reach and begin selling off parts.
The front office has made it clear that no offer for Michael Cuddyer will be considered unless they’re “blown away” by it. It’s more likely that they would offer up relievers Matt Belisle and Raphael Bettancourt to a contender shopping for bullpen help.
A fortuitous stretch of match-ups could shape the rest of Colorado’s season and decide its approach to its roster.
