When it comes to the Rockies, celebrate small victories

After winning an exciting five straight games, the Rockies have fallen back to earth a bit. They’ve dropped two straight to the Giants at their beautiful ball park.

On Monday night it was 4 to 2. On Tuesday it was 9 to 6. But, let’s not forget that those are the World Champs our boys were facing out West. The Rockies aren’t supposed to be good enough to snag a series from the Giants on their home turf. The fact is, Colorado has played better than most folks expected and, if we focus on the small victories, there remains plenty of cause to be upbeat.

In each of the last two games the bullpen has let the Rockies down. In both instances, however, the starting pitcher went a distance that fans would have found thrilling just one year ago. On Monday De La Rosa went six full innings and on Tuesday Nicasio went five. That’s a small victory.

The Rockies batted .317 and .296 in two losses versus the Giants. That’s a small victory.

Michael Cuddyer, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzolez and Troy Tulowitski continue to hit the ball, even against top-level pitching talent. That’s a small victory.

The Rockies remain above .500 and still have a chance to get a win in the City by the Bay this afternoon. That’s a small victory, too. And if they win it’ll be a big one.

As bad as the Rockies have been, it’s easy to fall into the trap of being too critical too soon, just as it was easy to be too excited too soon when they swept the Padres at Coors Field. As the cliché goes, a baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint.

Celebrate small victories now, because you were expecting to be watching one of the worst teams in baseball. So long as you aren’t, you’re a winner.
