Perhaps their impressive start has been a bit of an illusion. The Colorado Rockies are 14-7 and in first place in the NL West. Not even the most optimistic supporter of the club assumes that it will maintain a two-to-one winning pace throughout the season. The Rockies have had some ups and they will certainly have some downs. After 21 games, though, one thing seems abundantly clear – the 2013 Rockies are going to fight until the end of every game. That is something Manager Walt Weiss seems to have brought to the table.

Last season the Rockies had some significant injuries and every excuse to throw in the towel. Unfortunately, Jim Tracy seemed all too content to allow them to quit. The atmosphere that surrounded the club was absolutely dismal. They were a laughing stock and every player knew it. Not this year. The Rox have some serious swagger.

Aside from a couple piss-poor outing from Jeff Francis, the starting rotation has been pretty darn solid and the bullpen has been far better than anyone anticipated. Pitching has been the top reason for the early successes of the Purple and Black. The offense has mostly lived up to expectations, although it hasn’t needed to put up double-digit runs to win games the way folks though it would. The Rockies have been fun to watch, but not in the same way they were supposed to be. They’re actually fairly well rounded.

Walt Weiss has the Rockies fighting again and it’s awesome. How long can we expect the winning to continue? Who knows? What’s best is just to enjoy it while it lasts and hope that when things get worse that they don’t get too much worse. It’s great to have baseball back – and the fact that it’s fun again is a pretty awesome little bonus.
