Tulo…you’ll be a Yankee soon: speculation

All we have is speculation. We have no access. We don’t speak to coaches, and don’t speak to athletes (thank god). So to decry anything on this site that isn’t a confirmed fact as speculation is like complaining that water is wet. If we’re not reporting on something that happened and was confirmed by a Denver Post reporter, you can bet your ass it’s speculation. To pretend otherwise is a bit delusional and seems to be a way to pick holes at the fact that we aren’t “real” journalists. But I’ll keep speculating because it makes for good sports columns, sports discussion and the best sports blog in Colorado. (go here to vote for the South Stands as best sports blog and podcast)
Derek Jeter’s career is probably over, and watching him limp around the dugout last night and now knowing he broke his ankle in a loss to the Tigers, I was struck with yet another piece of “speculation”. The Rockies are going nowhere fast and will trade one of its high priced and well loved players based on this news. And if it’s ok for me to “speculate,” Troy Tulowitzki isn’t long for Coors Field as I’m sure the team will move him this off season to the Yankees to help rebuild a Rockies team in a ragged state of disrepair. Speculate on that.
We all know the story of how Tulowitzki grew up worshiping Derek Jeter and before he and Carlos Gonzalez signed their massive contracts a few years back, we joked uncomfortably about how he would be traded to the Bronx and take over the short stop position for his hero. But Jeter kept on trucking and the Rockies enjoyed a modicum of success – pushing that notion to the far reaches of our minds. But now the Rockies have hit rock bottom and are in need of a talent injection the likes that a trade for Tulo would bring about. Jeter is clearly near the end of his career and the Yankees are always on the look out to swing a deal for yet another superstar to bolster its roster. Tulo can be replaced by some of the team’s new blood and it’s a match made in baseball heaven that the Rockies should make happen if they know what’s good for them.
And they should make it happen. This move will make a Rockies fan base even more bitter towards ownership that has already made the team one of the least popular in town. And trading Tulo will be about as popular as the Ubaldo, Chris Drury and Chauncey Billups trades combined, but it will be necessary if the team has any hopes to climb out of the poop filled sewer it currently resides. Tulo is probably the best at his position, but he’s been hurt a little too much for comfort lately and his streaky hitting may be another cause for concern and a good reason to trade him right now. Not knowing what the future holds for Tulo (more speculation) it may be time to sell high on the talented short stop.
Jeter’s storied career may unfortunately be over. And while they don’t want to admit it, fans of the Rockies know exactly who can fill that role in New York. It may be “speculation”, but if it comes true, is anyone really going to be surprised? I’ll “speculate” all I want, thank you very much.
