Tom Nalen’s sexist diatribe on 102.3 ESPN radio was shocking

Colin D. | January 22, 2013

I am going to do my best to try summing up what I heard on my radio this afternoon as I drove from school to school picking up my kids. It was stunning even to me – and I am not sensitive, prudish or politically correct in any way. Trust me.

Les Shapiro and his co-host, former Bronco Tom Nalen were discussing Anna Burns-Welker’s comments on Facebook about Ray Lewis.

As everyone has heard by now, She posted:
“Proud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!”

Nalen takes issue with Mrs. Welker having made the comment (even though everything she said was basically true, except the part about wives. Lewis didn’t marry those women). Nalen said of player’s wives – and I quote – “They should not have access to anything to allow them to voice their opinions”.

Additionally, he said that, instead of the Pro Bowl, that the NFL should televise a player wife-swap where one player’s wife would have to clean another player’s toilet right after the player used it. “They don’t work”, Nalen repeated over and over again. “They stay home and clean toilets”.

During Nalen’s sexist diatribe Les Shapiro squirmed. He tried desperately to deflect Nalen’s comments, to clarify them, restate them, to steer Nalen in any other direction than the one he was headed in. But Nalen just kept right on going. It was amazing. It really was.

102.3 ESPN archives show segments, but not entire shows. The audio of Nalen’s comments will probably never see the light of day again. I wished like crazy that I had a recorder in the car so that I could have captured more of it than I did.
