Twitter can be a fascinating place sometimes. This is one of those times.

An interesting debate unfolded this morning between Mile High Sports and Cover 32 president James Merilatt and longtime Denver Broncos center Tom Nalen. The subject: does Terrell Davis deserve to be in the NFL Hall of Fame?

Of the three involved in the argument the surprising hold out was Nalen, Davis’ team mate throughout his pro career. Nalen carried the argument that most of Davis’ detractors do – that number thirty did not play enough seasons to be considered for the Hall.

As Twitter spats tend to do, this one got marginally personal, with a few barbs tossed in each direction. At one point in the debate Merilatt digged at Nalen, saying that had Nalen blocked for Curtis Martin he would “have as many rings as Kevin Mawae”.

The Broncos did win two Super Bowls with Davis and Davis was without question an essential ingredient in Denver’s back-to-back Championships. But it’s pretty bold to argue with Davis’ own center when it comes to his HOF qualifications. Tom Nalen was there. He blocked for TD. One would have to assume that he is a friend of TD’s.

Nalen’s willingness to take a negative public stance on Davis’ candidacy for the Hall of Fame is an example of what makes Nalen such a welcome addition to the local sports radio scene. Nalen is unapologetic and unafraid to speak his mind. He openly and honestly shares his experiences and his opinions and makes zero effort to walk the company line where the Denver Broncos are concerned. Whether or not you agree with Nalen’s stance on Terrell Davis’ candidacy for the Hall of Fame be glad that he will go on the record.

Naturally, most Broncos fans would prefer to see TD enshrined. A very good case can be made that he should be. But there’s strong sentiment on the other side of the issue as well. It’s just surprising to learn that the guy who blocked for him aligns with it.
