This is just one reason why animals shouldn’t play baseball.

I’m a fan of animals as much as the next guy, probably even more so. However I do draw the line at having them participate in any type of sporting event-in particular, the activities that are normally performed by humans.
Tara, the “hero cat”, who saved its family’s four year old son from an aggressive dog attack, was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the minor league Bakersfield Blaze game last night. I can’t fathom what other brilliant ideas got passed up for that one. I totally understand wanting to recognize and honor this heroic cat, however, the first pitch? Tara doesn’t exactly have opposable thumbs making it quite the feat to attempt.
Their solution to the whole cat not being able to throw concept was to rig a fishing line with a ball on the end of it. It went about as well as one would expect an idea of that magnitude to go. Being feline and all, Tara was unable to get anything going with the baseball and it was a big dud.
How about next time just honoring the cat during the seventh inning stretch or dedicating the game to Tara’s heroism. I’m all for the cat having its 15 minutes of fame, as she did make the rounds to the morning programs and other assorted talk shows.
I’d rather see a cat milk their 15 than the cast of the Jersey Shore any day of the week. However, let’s stick with humans only on the mound from here on out-unless of course the organization is gifting one of its players a horse. Then it’s all good.
