Bronco fans and media alike have been anxiously awaiting the matchup next week with the Patriots for a myriad of reasons.
One of the biggest meatballs out there was the off season acquisition of free agent slot receiver Wes Welker. As soon as Welker inked his two-year deal with Denver for $12 million, people were circling their calendars in both New England and the Mile High City in anticipation of the wideout’s return to Bean Town in Week 12.
Welker has had a phenomenal season through 11 weeks, currently sitting in second place in the league for touchdown receptions by a wide receiver behind Calvin Johnson with nine. He is tough as nails and has become a favorite target for Peyton Manning in the clutch.
I suppose that no one has been more excited about the return to Gillette Field than Wes Welker himself. When he decided to sign with Denver he left the Patriots and Tom Brady with a glaring deficiency at the receiver position. At the time it was unclear how Rob Gronkowski would recover from multiple surgeries and Brady’s remaining receiving corps was very young. Of course there was still Aaron Hernandez to catch the rock in New England, right? Well, we all know what happened there.
Welker has found a new home and based on his 648 receiving yards so far this season, Denver and the Broncos system certainly agrees with him. With a current record of 9-1 and the cat bird seat in the AFC West, this upcoming matchup with New England is set for a clash of epic proportions for the Broncos. Given the rivalry between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, along with the recent playoff history and the addition of Welker, this could be the game of the season in the NFL.
However, Denver may have to slay the Brady, Belichick and McDaniels three-headed dragon without the help of Wes Welker.
During the fourth quarter of the game against the Chiefs, Welker sustained a concussion on a 20-yard catch-and-run play. Somehow, despite the hit, he was allowed to come back in on that same drive completing a catch for nine yards before being sidelined for the remainder of the game. I would assume that the league will have something to say about the fact that Welker returned to the field with concussion-like symptoms but that is a whole different article.
He will have to pass a series of tests before Welker is cleared to play on Sunday. Being as though the slot receiver only missed three games in six seasons with the Patriots, he will do everything he can to be on that field next week.
These days, it seems that folks are eager to rally together to help a coach, player or even city that is injured or down on their luck. Guys, it’s time to band together and help our ailing wideout get better so that he can get out there and stick it to Robert Kraft and his minions.
I fully expect to see a #WELKERSTRONG before the week is out.
Who am I kidding, I am sure it’s already out there.
