The hiring of Patrick Roy kicks a ton of ass.

The Colorado Avalanche have been bad for a really long time. The squad has not qualified for the playoffs in any of the past three seasons despite the fact that half of the teams in the NHL are given the nod. It’s not a wonder than fan interest has been waning badly.
The Avalanche have been guilty of an offense worse that being terrible, though. They have been terrible AND boring. Boring is something no team can afford to be in a four-sport town with myriad options in terms of entertainment and activities. It has gotten more and more difficult for people to justify spending their hard-earned dollars on a night out with the Avs – especially with NHL tickets leading all four major sports in price.
Finally the Kroenkes are cleaning house. What’s-his-name, the ineffective coach is at long last history and Pierre “I don’t even live here” Lacroix has been shown the door along with his kid. It’s time to kick ass again in Colorado and, like the Broncos and Rockies, the organization has decided to turn to its past to bring success in the future. Super Joe Sakic is charged with making Colorado relevant again. His first big move is to bring back the fiery goalkeeper behind which the Avalanche took two cups and make him the head coach.
I have heard plenty from the usual blabbers blabbing about how the hiring of Roy seems suspiciously like a PR move rather than a hockey one. Roy coached in Juniors, the skeptics are saying, and is therefore not qualified to handle an NHL team. I call bullshit. Colorado could have turned over stones and had some savvy veteran retread coach come crawling out but they went bold instead. The hiring of Patrick Roy kicks a ton of ass.
My wife was a huge Avs fan for a great many years. Like so many other people she just kind of stopped watching. It was the trading of John Michael Liles that was sort of the final straw for her. But, when I told her that Roy would be the coach she replied “woo hoo!”. She’s back on board and so will lots of other former Avalanche fans that stopped caring.
The Colorado Avalanche are interesting again. Sakic, Roy and Popeye’s kid are going to give us all a reason to watch and to get excited.
