The 2012 Rockies made their 2013 debut on Wednesday

The Colorado Rockies haven’t won a game at San Francisco’s AT&T Park since August of 2012. Since then they’ve surrendered two series sweeps to the Giants there. This year’s rendition of the Rockies appeared to be on a new course, even after losing to the Giants on Monday and on Tuesday, but with Wednesday’s

10-zip drubbing at the hands of the reigning World Champions, fans witnessed the return of the 2012 team … and that’s not good.

There were no admirable pitching efforts yesterday, no Cargo home runs plopping into McCovey Cove. Instead, we got an eyeful of ineptness. Unlike De La Rosa and Nicasio, who, despite dealing in losing efforts, pitched several innings each, Jeff Francis found himself taking that long walk from the mound back to the dugout before the start of the second, already down seven runs. The Rockies potentially potent offense was unable to deliver. Only seven runners were stranded, but that’s mostly because so few Rockies reached base to begin with.

The feeling was all-too familiar. Yesterday’s loss had “road to 100” written all over it. Now the Rockies have a day off to regroup before facing the Padres again, a team they’ve swept once already. Confidence will be crucial.

It’s too soon to say that the wheels have fallen off the 2013 campaign, but the stark contrast between the Giants and the Rockies illustrated the chasm Colorado must cross before ever contending in the NL West again. San Francisco was a little bit better that Colorado on Monday and Tuesday – they were on a completely different plane on Wednesday.

It’s tough to remain hopeful. The Rockies are still above .500, though, with a chance to rebound this week.
