Some free advice for Tim Tebow

South Stands Denver | April 30, 2013

“Tebow has become a victim of his own success; and thus, despite his countless flaws in his quarterbacking toolbox, it has become impossible for Tebow to sit on the bench as a backup quarterback. And while Tebow’s fans blame John Elway, Rex Ryan, and Barack Obama for his fall from top to the bottom – the blame solely rests on Tim Tebow.”

It’s hard to believe that Tim Tebow has gone from the cover of Sports Illustrated and on top of the football world to being cut by the New York Jets in just sixteen months.

Allow me to explain the fall of Tim Tebow…

To begin, Tebow is the most unconventional quarterback to come through the NFL in quite some time and he might be the the most unconventional quarterback in NFL history. During his magical 2011-2012 season with the Denver Broncos, Tebow wowed his fans and critics alike with his inability to hit the broadside of a barn through three quarters before looking like the second coming of John Elway in the fourth quarter. Tebow quickly became the most polarizing figure in professional sports.

The Tebow led Broncos went from 1-4 to 8-8 and from the bottom to the top of the AFC West. In the opening round of the 2012 NFL Playoffs, Tebow throw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as he led the Broncos to an upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The following week, Tebow’s magic pumpkin exploded as Tom Brady and the New England Patriots annihilated the Broncos 45-10. Tebow Time was over.

Last offseason, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets after the Broncos signed Peyton Manning. Most believed that it would only be a matter of time before Tebow replaced Mark Sanchez as the Jet’s starting quarterback. However, Tebow would be nothing more than a novelty act for the Jets who refused to give him a chance – despite Sanchez’s underachieving at the quarterback position. The 2012-2013 came and went without Tim Tebow starting a single game for the New York Jets.

Tebow’s stat line for 2012-2013 reads like this: 6-8 for 39 yards, 0 TDs, INTs; 32 carries, 102 yards, O TDs. Obviously, Rex Ryan never believed in Tim Tebow.
It should come as no surprise that the New York Jets released Tebow this morning. This is a twist that few saw coming in the middle of Tebow’s incredible run with the Broncos just two years ago.

So – what is next for Tim Tebow?

To be honest, I don’t see Tebow playing for an NFL team in the 2013-2014 season. If anything Tebow has become a victim of his own success; and thus, despite his countless flaws in his quarterbacking toolbox, it has become impossible for Tebow to sit on the bench as a backup quarterback. And while Tebow’s fans blame John Elway, Rex Ryan, and Barack Obama for his fall from top to the bottom – the blame solely rests on Tim Tebow.

The problem with Tim Tebow is that he does not think there is a problem with the way that he plays the quarterback position. Because of his success in high school and college, Tebow has refused to change his game and improve things like his throwing motion and footwork since he came into the NFL. The facts are the facts – there isn’t one NFL team that wants Tim Tebow to be their third string quarterback, let alone their starting quarterback.

Tebow must accept that he needs to change his game if he wants another shot in the NFL. If he’s smart, Tebow will go play this season in the United Football League. Without a doubt, one of the teams will give him a shot based on his marketing capabilities alone. Tebow needs to reinvent himself with shortening his throwing motion, improving his footwork, and by learning to play the quarterback position from inside the pocket.

It’s time for Tebow to stop listening to his inner-circle and break away from his family run publicity team if he wants to save his NFL career. Tebow, if nothing else, is an extremely talented athlete who is capable of making the needed changes to his game. However, he first has to accept that he needs to make those changes. And now that he’s unwanted by the National Football League, I hope that Tim Tebow will take my advice and realize that he’s not going to reinvent how you play quarterback in the National Football League. In light of that, he needs to hone his skills to that of a typical NFL quarterback.
It’s your move, Timmy…

You better not fumble this one.
