Joe Sacco needs a napkin. He got Kiszed on.

Denver Post sports columnist Mark Kiszla really let him have it in a March 4 column entitled “Avs’ malaise bad news for Joe Sacco“.

After the Pittsburgh Penguins came into Pepsi Center and throttled the Avalanche 5-1 last night in front of a home crowd that was predominantly dressed in black and yellow, Kiszla has lost hope for a Colorado post-season berth:

“Is Colorado ready to make the NHL playoffs?

Right here, right now, after consecutive bad losses at home, it appears the answer is a disheartening no.”

He’s right, of course. The Avalanche had us fooled after they knocked down four straight wins. Now they have dropped two in row including one against the NHL’s crappiest team. It’s not looking good.

Most folks wondered how coach Joe Sacco managed to keep his job heading into this season. Now, with his Avs looking like they will miss the playoffs again, Kiszla thinks it’s time for Joe to go.

“Sacco is a good man. But his players aren’t making a convincing argument to renew his contract.

In a league where faith in a coach can be broken as abruptly as a stick is splintered on the ice, Sacco heads into the final 16 games of the playoff push in a tough spot, standing with one foot on the Avalanche bench and one foot in no man’s land.”

Kiszla made his name with dramatic statements and by calling for heads. In this case, however, it’s tough to argue with the guy. Colorado has been mired in inadequacy for far too long. Something has got to give.
