RAPIDS WIN! Thousands pretend to care.
The Colorado Rapids are MLS Champions. Does anybody really care?
I have a confession to make. I barely watched the MLS Cup match on ESPN between the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas. I was much, much, more interersted in watching Mike Vick and the Philadelhia Eagles face their division foes, the New York Giants on NBC’s Football Night in America.
What kind of Denver Sports fan does that make me? The honest kind.
The fact of the matter is, even if soccer didn’t suck, the MLS still would. Tonight’s game was the CHAMPIONSHIP and the stands were over half empty despite the fact that the game was held in Toronto, a city one would assume gives two shits about soccer.
Tomorrow morning, Eurocentric hipster blowhards from Parker to Northglenn will gather around the water cooler comparing notes on a game they didn’t actually watch. I won’t be among them.
I flipped to ESPN during commercials and caught a few minutes of the game and that’s about it. Some folks I follow on Twitter clued me in when the Rapids scored, allowing me to hit the “last” button on my remote in time to see the post-goal celebrations and the replays. That’s as much time as I was willing to dedicate with NFL football on another network.
I just don’t really care.
I wish I did, don’t get me wrong. I’m a dedicated Denver sports fan. I want to be on board. I just can’t muster interest in Rapids soccer. I’m not going to fake it, either.
The rest of you can go right ahead.
