Patrick Roy is living in a glass house where Varlamov is concerned.

Patrick Roy is facing his first big challenge as the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche – dealing with the arrest of his star goal tender on domestic violence charges.

Roy is tacked with keeping his successful young team on track while attempting to keep media coverage an arms length away. This is no time for the Avalanche to begin dealing with distractions like this one.

It is also Roy’s job to provide Varlamov, who is accused of detaining his girlfriend, dragging her by the hair and stomping on her, guidance and leadership and possibly discipline. But, as Roy played the same position as Varlamov, he was once in the same position. The Avalanche great was himself arrested on domestic violence charges almost precisely thirteen years ago.

On October 23, 2000 Patrick Roy’s wife Michelle Piuze called 911 to report that her husband was attacking her. Roy tore two doors in his home off the hinges and, at the very least, scared the poor woman half to death. Criminal charges against Roy would eventually be dropped, but not before the keeper faced the possibility of being deported. Varlamov could face the same.

How is a coach who was once arrested on charges of domestic violence deal with a goal tender arrested for the same? Is Roy not living in a glass house?

Perhaps Roy’s having been through a similar experience will have provided him with just the kind of insight he needs to help him serve as not only a hockey coach but as a life coach to the 25 year-old Russian. Maybe Roy can help him understand why that behavior is not acceptable in America. Maybe he can explain to Varlamov how, despite the time that has gone by since charges were levied against him, and despite the fact that those charges were dropped, people still remember him as a wife beater.

For fans of the Colorado Avalanche today has been rough. In addition to the revelations about Varlamov’s arrest, we have just learned that Steve Downie, a fan favorite has been traded.
