Two games down. Two straight Super Bowl Champions vanquished. Yes, the 2013 Denver Broncos really are as impressive as everybody though they would be. Heck, they might even be better.
With two superstar defensive players, Champ Bailey and Von Miller sidelined, Denver’s resistance to the New York Giants’ powerful offense during yesterday’s beat-down might have been the takeaway if not for Peyton Manning’s continuing dominance at his position. Four interceptions of little brother Eli was certainly a thing of beauty but it was easily overshadowed by the ease with which the offense sliced its way downfield in the second half. Manning enjoys an embarrassment of riches when it comes to weapons at his disposal and his unparalleled awareness of where those weapons are on the field makes him one of history’s great gun slingers. Laser, rocket arm? Perhaps not. But Manning’s guidance systems are one of a kind, as evidenced by the ninety points the Broncos have amassed in just two tilts.
Slow starts are a cause for some worry. The Broncos are yet to score a single point in the first quarter in 2013. Turnovers are another legitimate concern. Montee Ball’s fumble on what should have been an early scoring play halted Denver’s progress early and swung momentum in the Giants’ favor, albeit briefly. Against the best teams in the NFC Denver may find themselves falling behind but compared to the other “powerhouses” in the AFC the Broncos are the juggernaut.
I’ll happily admit that I foresaw the Giants game as one that would be far closer than it was. I even picked New York to cover the 4.5 point Vegas spread. I was deliciously wrong about that. The Broncos lit them up 41-23. Already they are favored at home against Oakland next week by a vast margin (14.5 points) and I won’t be making the mistake of again assuming they won’t cover.
This team will be 3-0 when the dust settles next Sunday. That you can take to the bank. And the relative ease with which they dispatched first the Ravens then the Giants is cause to suspect that they should be favored in every single game they play this year. It’s not insane to suggest that the Broncos could go undefeated through the regular season. They could certainly head into their bye week 8-0. The Eagles game looks less daunting than it did before and it’s doubtful that the Cowboys or Redskins can find a way to slow them down.
Prior to the season beginning I was stingy with my optimism when it came to the Denver Broncos. But now that I have seen them play I can no longer be. I am on board with the national pundits who have said since the preseason that the Denver Broncos are probably going to go all the way.
