August in Colorado is unseasonably cool thus far and Thursday, August 8th feels like the coolest day yet. It is overcast and grey. It is sixty-one degrees at eleven in the morning. Football weather. It feels just right. The Broncos are in San Francisco preparing to open the pre-season against the ‘Niners and the temperature in Denver says “bring it on”. Meanwhile, the corpse of the 2013 Rockies is getting cold.
Even the miserable San Diego Padres have pushed ahead of the Colorado Rockies in the NL West standings. Even they are in better shape than a team that is on the cusp of dropping its ninth road game on a ten game trip. The Rockies will trot out a AAA pitching prospect called “Manship” tonight; a move the team will sell as an opportunity to help a prospect develop but that clearly signals surrender on the part of Dan O’Dowd and whomever else is calling the shots at 20th and Blake. They know what we know. It’s over. If anything, the Rockies are worse than they were last year – despite their hot start – despite their three all-stars. Cover your eyes, folks. There are still 47 games left. What lies ahead is slow death.
This dull, cloudy August day is a perfect one on which to pass the torch to the Denver Broncos. For them “next year” begins today – and it could not begin at a more perfect time. Football season is literally in the air. The Broncos know the role they play in the pantheon of Denver sports. They are the winners. They own this town. They aren’t “developing talent”. They’re not “encouraged by their progress”. They win or they fail. There are no silver linings for this football team. Super Bowl or bust. Broncos Country is bursting at the seams. Fit to be tied.
The Rockies enjoyed a period of swollen expectations twenty games into their 2013 campaign but it’s been all downhill from there. Still, it wasn’t until this week that the most optimistic Rockies fans threw in the towel. Now event they are digging out their orange and blue.
