I saw this Carmelo Anthony jersey hanging in the thrift store today. It’s not the first time I’ve seen them since the celebrated “super star” left Denver for the main stage of New York City. But this one stood out to me because it was just hanging there by itself, no one biting on its $4.99 price tag and rapidly fading letters. And this is where it should be.

Carmelo Anthony jerseys have been filling the racks of every thrift store in Denver for some time now. And if you’re still wearing a Melo jersey to a Nuggets game, it means two things: 1) you’re too poor to afford anything else or 2) you’re too clueless about the team you’re appearing to support. And since you’ve ponied up for a pricey seat to a Nuggets game where $7 beers await you, I’m going with option two. Carmelo has moved on but since he’s no longer Denver’s problem, if you want to move on with him, you need to buy a Carmelo Knicks jersey. Because wearing the Nuggets one is just depressing. And says a lot about you as a fan.

I know jerseys aren’t cheap, but like a Broncos Cutler jersey, if you’re still wearing it, you’ve got some explaining to do. There are just some players you can’t represent anymore in jersey form: Bill Romanowski, Brandon Lloyd, the aforementioned Cutler and Matt Holliday. Al Wilson, Ed McCaffrey, Chauncey Billups are all ok to wear because the circumstances in which they left/retired and their meaning to their respective teams. I would even give you a Ubaldo Jimenez jersey for the simple fact that he’s the only – and maybe ever – player in Rockies history to throw a no-hitter. But take that Craig Anderson Avs jersey and put it in the trash. Or better yet, send it to the thrift store.

So if you call yourself a Nuggets fan, you have to retire that Carmelo jersey. Put it in a bag and drop it off at the local ARC. It will have plenty of company hanging with the Cavalier Lebrons or the many, many Clinton Portis Broncos jerseys haunting the aisles. Someone who really needs it will buy it to keep themselves warm or it will get shipped off to a third world country where it will mean about as much there as it does here now.
