McGahee maneuver just the latest in Broncos bravado

“Veteran running back? We don’t need no stinking veteran running back” – John Elway

Willis McGahee now knows what Elvis Dumervil already knew: the Broncos have bravado.

John Elway isn’t sitting in that office of his hoping and praying that his players don’t get away. He’s looking down the road, baby. And if you (or your contract) don’t fit into Elway’s long-term plan or if the fax machine at your nearest Kinko’s is on the blink … your ass is gone. Next man up, beeotch. The Broncos will have plenty of players to pay over the next couple of seasons.

The Twitterverse has bravado, too. Plenty of people let Willis have it this morning, pointing out that the veteran misinterpreted the meaning of the word “voluntary” when it comes to off-season activities. In Elway’s NFL that word means “involuntary”. McGahee might have made skipping OTAs a “tradition” back in Baltimore but it didn’t work out too well for him here. And now he’s on the street.

But are the Broncos better off without Willis McGahee? Call me dubious. Yes, they have some promising youngsters looking ready to make the scene, but there’s something to be said for having a grizzled vet toting the rock. With Peyton Manning’s window closing as rapidly as it is releasing McGahee might have been a bit too bold a move. There’s not really time to give the young guys a season or two to come into their own.

McGahee, who spent the end of last season injured, is tanned, a-little-too-rested and ready to roll. Broncos fans will be hoping that someone really is ready to take his place.
