Mark Knudson is out of his mind. But that’s OK by the folks at Mile High Sports. Nothing attracts page views to a fledgling sports blog like the outrageous ramblings of insane ex-jock. Whether Knudson is justifying homophobia, defending the indefensible or inventing new rules for the international sport of soccer, he never fails to draw attention to himself. In an online world that is all about eyeballs, plenty land on Knudson’s diatribes, even if only to object vociferously.
It’s doubtful that Mark Knudson truly believes half the ludicrous things he writes for Mile High Sports. He’s a skilled columnist, which likely means that he has a head on his shoulders. Assuming he is intelligent, and it appears that he is, he must make assertions for the specific purpose of stirring the pot. The most recent lunatic position he has taken was published this morning at Mile High Sports web.
Knudson, in an article headlined “Miller and Braun are one in the same”, argues that embattled Broncos linebacker Von Miller is no different than Ryan Braun, the juicing left fielder for the Milwaukee Brewers. Braun was suspended by Major League baseball for the remainder of the 2013 season for being caught using performance enhancing drugs. It wasn’t the first time Braun had been caught. The league attempted to suspend him in 2012, also, but he famously got off on a technicality.
Ryan Braun used drugs. Von Miller used drugs. By Knudson’s math that is where the similarities between the two professionals begin. The truth is that that’s where the similarities between them end and that Knudson is trolling Broncos fans hoping for a reaction.
Ryan Braun is a cheater. Von Miller is a dumb kid who got high a few times. There’s a huge difference between using performance enhancers to attain an edge and taking recreation drugs just to have a good time. The former is boneheaded, the latter is patently dishonest and it tilts the playing field in favor of people willing to cut corners.
In his article, though, Mark Knudson takes the exact opposite tact, saying “As the ticket buying public, shouldn’t we be more upset at the guy who is using stuff that will ultimately hurt his play rather than the guy who is looking for a way to get better?” The answer to this ridiculous question is quite emphatically “no”. Knudson either knows this and is fishing for reactions, or he’s completely out of touch with the way thinking people perceive PEDs in sports. Knudson writes, “I can’t help but wonder why the public outcry about Braun is so intense while the Von Miller story barely moves the meter.” Perhaps he slept through the steroids scandal of the early 2000’s.
Knudson, who is doubtlessly drinks alcohol, blasts the professional leagues for treating recreation drug use as a lesser infraction than performance enhancing drug use. Von Miller, he claims, is a “cheater” because he “cheated” the Broncos out of his services (potentially) for four games. He will defend guys like Braun, Alex Rodriguez and the great dopers of the steroid era for “just trying to get better”, ignoring the millions and million dollars in ill-gotten salaries those players bilked fans out of.
Knudson, of course, played baseball, not football. Perhaps that’s the reason that he can identify with the desire to juice for performance. Maybe he juiced himself. It’s more likely, though, that he has figured out how to push people’s buttons and that he knew equating the behavior of Ryan Braun to that of Von Miller would drive traffic to Mile High Sports web site, much like we know that take-down articles about Mark Knudson will drive traffic to ours.
