Lineup changes at 104.3 the Fan are bad news for Sandy Clough fans

As sports radio listeners go I suppose I am a bit of a oddity. Because my work day begins at 10am rather than at 9am, and because I spend my mornings shuttling my kids around, I listen more between 7-10 am than at any other time of the day. Morning drive and post-morning drive are my favorite time slots. For that reason I catch a lot of Sandy Clough.

Not anymore .

Starting March 3rd 104.3 the Fan is replacing Sandy from 9-noon with the nationally syndicated Dan Patrick Show which had previously aired on the Fan’s sister station, AM1600 the Zone.

Clough is being added to the noon-3pm slot with Drew Goodman and Scott Hastings. The new 3-man show will likely be a 2-man show fairly often as baseball season begins and coincides with basketball season since both Goodman and Hastings will be traveling regularly. Since Clough tends to stay in Denver the station can pretty well be assured of his availability on a daily basis.

I have heard scuttlebutt for some time that Sandy’s show was flagging in the rating department and that the Fan was likely to either pair him with another personality or shift him into another show. I wasn’t prepared to learn that the Fan would defer to syndicated programming from 9-noon. It’s a time period where 102.3 ESPN is also airing a national show, the Herd with Colin Cowherd.

Mile High Sports will now have the only local sports talk show in the post-morning drive slot with the Brandon Spano show which recently moved over from night side, replacing the Reed Marks show.

I am a Brandon Spano fan. He’s great. But I haven’t liked hearing his show in the mornings. He’s a night guy, a ranter, a call taker, the perfect host at the end of a long day when you’re feeling charged up and want to listen to a host that comes at topics hard, delivers diatribes and embraces debate with callers. His move to mornings has not sat well with me – and now his show will be the only one in the time period when I listen to the most local sports talk radio.

It would seem to me as though Mile High Sports has a golden opportunity to fill the 9-noon to slot with a very, very strong local option.

The Dan Patrick Show is very, very good. So is the Herd. But, unless it’s Peyton Manning they’re talking about, I know I am not going to get any Denver chat from either of those shows. I want to hear about the Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies and Nuggets when I fire up my radio – not the Yankees, Seahawks and Dodgers.

Nobody covers the local teams with the thoughtfulness that Sandy Clough does. For his fans, the new lineup changes at 104.3 are not good news. His 9-noon show will be sorely missed.

There is a silver lining, though. The Fan is adding a new nightly show, 9pm-midnight, with Ryan Edwards and Shawn Drotar called “the Fan Late Night”. I am familiar with the work of both of these up and coming local talk talents and will look forward to checking out their new show.
