It’s hard to believe that the Avalanche have gone from one of the proudest franchises in the NHL to the laughing stock of the NHL in the past ten years. Jerseys hanging from the rafters with the names Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, and Bourque remind fans of the glory days of yesteryear. And now – the Avalanche seem to be melting away into obscurity, thanks to an incompetent front office and a terrible coach. At this point, I think Gordon Bombay would be an upgrade from Joe Sacco.
The Avalanche currently stand in last place of the Western Conference standings and are just two points ahead of the Florida Panthers in the race for the first pick in the NHL draft. Despite having promising young talent – Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landsekog, and Ryan O’Reilly – the Avalanche seem destined to continue adding to the loss column due to shaky goaltending, awful defense, and, oh yeah, incompetent management and terrible coaching. There is nothing to suggest that the Avalanche’s current front office is capable of restoring the Avalanche to a level of respectability, let alone a level of contention for the Stanley Cup.
Not that long ago – the Broncos found themselves in the situation that the Avalanche currently find themselves in. Josh McDaniels came in like a hurricane and completely destroyed the Denver Broncos. And there was only one person who was capable of restoring the Broncos to the level of Super Bowl contender – so Pat Bowlen called up John Elway and asked him to take over the Broncos. Two years later, the Broncos have won back-to-back AFC West Championships and look poised to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy next fall. That is all thanks to John Elway restoring order at Dove Valley for the orange and blue.
It’s time for Stan Kroenke to use a play out of Pat Bowlen’s playbook and ask Joe Sakic to save the Colorado Avalanche. Super Joe gave his heart and soul to the Avalanche every single day during his twenty-one year career with the Colorado Avalanche. Currently, Sakic holds the title of executive advisor with the Avalanche. It’s time for the Avalanche to change that title to general manager.
Sakic is the only man for the job when it comes to rebuilding the Avalanche. He would bring a vast amount of knowledge from a lifetime spent playing the game of hockey. Super Joe is the Avs’ John Elway – and there is not a doubt in my mind that Sakic would be the second Denver sports legend to successfully make the transition from player to front office executive.
It can’t get any worse for the Avalanche. I think that we can all agree on that. Why not let the face of the franchise take over and see if he can restore order for the burgundy and white?
The clock is ticking, Stan – it’s time to ask Joey to clean up your mess.
