Les Shapiro has every right to be mad. Some things were said on the most recent South Stands Denver fancast that were uncomplimentary of the local radio host. But lost in all the recent hub-bub surrounding that show, is that the comments were not said by yours truly or my co-host Colin Daniels, but by a guest of the show. Shapiro’s apparent anger toward us is unwarranted and misguided and we felt it was necessary to address it.
If you haven’t heard the show yet it won’t matter because at the request of Darren “D Mac” Mckee, we trimmed out some of the things he said about Shapiro because like waking up after a wild bender, he regretted speaking his mind in the free form format of the podcast. And figuring he didn’t need to stir the pot any further with the likes of Shapiro, we took it out.
That’s understandable and since we don’t want to alienate the people who come on the show, we accommodated his request because it does us no good to make our guests uncomfortable. But the editing was done because D Mac asked us. Not because we were afraid of offending the delicate sensibilities of Les Shapiro.
What was said was not necessarily the opinion of the South Stands Denver Fancast, so for Shapiro to tee off on us via Twitter was unnecessary and a bizarre attempt to pick on the little guy of the sports broadcasting world.
Shapiro said this, “And if you wanna sound more intelligent and sit at the adult’s table someday, learn yer subjects better.”
Insulting, yes. But the whole reason we do this podcast is because we don’t want to “sit at the adult’s table.” This format allows us to be very free with what we say and allows people like D Mac to open up a bit where they normally wouldn’t on their regular radio shows. Shapiro’s assumption that we want to “sit at the adult’s table” is way off base.

I was thrilled by D Mac’s candor. He had his reasons for saying what he did about Les and let it fly. This wasn’t an attack out of the blue and if you heard the original show, you would know he had an outstanding issue with Les that we had absolutely nothing to do with. I don’t know if Les felt we should have stopped D Mac, but like any radio host will tell you, when you have a guest giving you compelling stuff, you don’t pull the plug on him. Whether you agree or not.
So again, Shapiro has every right to be mad about what was said. No one likes to hear their name coupled with a rant about what an ass-clown they are. And if it was Colin or myself who said it, he would have a legitimate beef with podcast. But to chide us like children and call us unprofessional is comical. Do you know what is unprofessional? Bullying an upstart sports blog when you can’t get satisfaction from the person who actually made the comments. Les is welcome to come on the podcast and discuss it further, but since we didn’t start it, we don’t feel the need to finish it.
