The Broncos come off their bye to visit the rival Chargers today in sunny San Diego. The rest did Denver good to be sure, but it will also mean that they’re rusty. I anticipate another slow start for Peyton Manning and the Blue and Orange offense. The defense, however, had been beginning to gel before the break. I see the unit picking right up where it left off.
While the Broncos offense hiccups through the first quarter, possibly even turning the ball over early, the defense will post the first points of the game. The tone for this one will be set with an early Phil Rivers pick-six. It will be one of three he throws today.
The Broncos will open up an early 10-0 lead with a defensive TD and a Prater field goal. San Diego will be forced into catch-up mode. That’s never a good thing for that team, despite their powerful offense. The Broncos will struggle to contain Danny Woodhead, though. His catching out of the backfield will keep the Chargers in this game.
At the half Denver will have accumulated 24 points. San Diego will have amassed 17.
In the second half Peyton Manning will begin to light the Chargers up. Between his two third-quarter passing TDs and the one TD the Broncos defense puts up, the Broncos will have a total of 35 points coming into the fourth. The Chargers will have been shut out in the third. The score will be 35-17 entering the fourth.
In garbage time Phil Rivers will finally begin to shine. He will pass for two TDs in the final period to Peyton Manning’s one. It will be too little too late, though. San Diego will get blown out at home today, 31-42 by the Denver Broncos.
