Don’t look now but your Colorado Avalanche, who were “Rockies bad” in the lockout-shortened 2012 season have begun 2013 on an absolute tear. Last night the burgundy and white traveled to Boston and ripped one away from the Boston Bruins, a squad that won the Stanley Cup just two years ago.
Fans were fired up enough when the Avs were 1-0 and Patrick Roy was breaking furniture. Now the team remains undefeated and untied after four games, giving them their hottest start since the Quebec Nordiques first relocated to Colorado. We were all hoping for improvement, but nobody could have expected this. These Avalanche are aggressive and they are tough and they play like a mirror-reflection of their head coach.
Obviously, the Avalanche will not plow through eighty-plus games without losing. It’s almost inevitable that, at some point this season, they will suffer through a losing streak. There’s likely to be some kind of correction in their record to bring them back down to earth. But the excitement surrounding the Avalanche is unlikely to flag. A new era of Colorado hockey is afoot and, like the players, the fans want to be a part of it again.
Attendance numbers at Pepsi Center are likely to be up at least a third this season, if not double. Once again, the Avalanche are a hot ticket. All credit to Kroenke Sports in this regard. The company made a wise and difficult choice to clean house and start anew. Nobody predicted that the changes would work out so well so fast.
The Colorado Avalanche are four and-oh-my-goodness and off to their fastest ever start. It’s a great time to be an Avalanche fan (again).
