Fans remain reluctant to get excited about the Rockies

Colin D. | June 5, 2012

Just as the firestorm of media criticism of the Colorado Rockies reached its zenith two weeks ago I predicted that they would win 12 in a row – very soon if not immediately. It just seemed inevitable that the team would do something dramatic to make the talking heads of Denver look foolish with all the doomsday rhetoric being spewed.

Although the Rockies did sneak a win in Cincy, the Reds series seemingly weighed them down enough to hit rock bottom. That trip was the end of the road for Jamie Moyer whose release lifted the stink of death on the team. Ever since the difficult decision was made to part ways with number 50 the purple and black have made a stunning about-face.

The Rockies returned home from Ohio to sweep the Astros in four at Coors Field over Memorial Day Weekend – then they took two of three from the Dodgers. Last night they got off to a hot start against the Diamond Backs, too, in their second straight game highlighted by a dynamic performance from the mound.  The Rockies have won 7 of their last 8 games.

Still, fans are reluctant to embrace the streak.

I posed the question last night on Twitter: “how many more do the Rockies have to win before people get excited?” The consensus was that Colorado needs to get back to .500 before folks will see their turn around as significant.

They are six games under .500 now with six of their next eight games scheduled at home. They face some tough squads but I don’t think it’s unrealistic to think they might be back to even-Steven by the time they head to Philadelphia on the 19th.

They dug themselves a mighty hole in March, but the Rockies seem to have turned things around nicely.
