College Football finally comes out with a playoff and it sucks

Rich Kurtzman | July 4, 2012

Ding dong, the witch is dead. Which witch? The wicked witch!

After years of utilizing a corrupt system that put the cartel of six conferences in ultimate power, college football has finally come to its senses.

Well, at least partially.

The powers that be decided last week to disband the cartel that was running college football and to create a playoff.

It was much needed and took far too long to come to be.

Even though college football has appeased its fans with a playoff, they should be asking for more.

Four teams to make the playoff pool to become the division 1 college football champion is an infinitesimally small number of the 124 teams.

It’s a mere 3.2 percent of the teams that begin the season at the collegiate level’s highest rank, a far cry from the 20-plus percent of teams eligible that make the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament every year.

I’m not calling for a tournament that large, but one of eight or even 16 teams would be much better than only four.

While college football did away with favoring six select conferences over the others, they will undoubtedly still pick from those powerhouses when deciding on the four playoff teams each winter.

For fans of teams like Colorado State, Air Force and even CU, the new four-team playoff format is damning.

Of course the four teams will have to either go undefeated or lose only one game, but since strength of schedule is relied upon so heavily to decide which teams make the college football playoffs, our favorite college football teams will never realize a national championship.

Sure, Colorado has the best chance, being a part of the Pac-12, but going undefeated in a conference that stacked with talented teams is a tall task.

CSU and AFA have no chance until they can move up and into a more legitimate conference, playing the best of the best each and every week, and hoping for everything to go their way and finish a season 12-0.

So much has to happen perfectly for one of our teams to make the college football playoff, why should we even pay attention?

The BCS was bad, this is possibly even worse.

Of course, the men in charge will take the truck loads of money they made from the old format and add to the already mountainous piles of cash they have stashed.

Yes, this new playoff format is expected to make more money—twice as much to be exact—as the bottom line for the change was again the all mighty dollar.

It’s not good for competition, it’s not good for the players, who will have to now play multiple games after weeks of rest, and it’s not fair to the vast majority of the teams involved.

But as long as it lines the pockets of the men in charge, it will be.
