The Denver Broncos haven’t earned a Super Bowl berth in 15 long years. There are members of the local and national media that were practically in diapers the last time the Mile High City was able to come together and celebrate such a momentous achievement by the storied franchise.
As we all know, fashion, especially in sports is very cyclical. At South Stands Denver, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the hot sports fashion looks that were all the rage the last time John Elway hoisted up the Lombardi trophy in 1998.
While researching this, I did find that some of it is back in style, making me feel super old. However, luckily some has remained in the fashion graveyard where it should stay for eternity.
First up, the glorious neon windbreaker.
C’mon, you know you either had one or were super jealous of those that were able to sport these to school or the mall. This lovely gem seen here is actually from the 1995 Super bowl, played between the 49ers and Chargers.
Ironically, this is the only Super Bowl that I personally have attended and no this is not from my personal collection.
Next we have the pants that should never make any sort of comeback under any circumstances: Zubaz
There are really no suitable words to describe the awfulness of these pants. I’m pretty sure this photo speaks for itself. I love the tucked in shirt, too.
This next fashion trend that came and went in the 90’s were these beauties: Roos sneakers.
You know you rocked these in both the blue and orange when cheering on the Broncos in their matchups versus the Packers in 1997 and the Falcons in 1998, in Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII respectively. If you didn’t your buddy sure did.
Starter Jackets are back baby! These satiny fashion statements were all the rage during the 90’s and are gracing the store shelves once again for this Super Bowl.
Shown here is the Denver Broncos version from the last time the boys were in the big game. This season they are only showing an orange version in the stores. I’m not exactly sure what the decision process was in both bringing them back and only going with the one color but hey, to each his own, right? Cod piece not included.
This final fashion statement comes from the actual NFL licensed gear for Super Bowl XXXIII. It is of course Starter brand, as they ran the roost in pro gear at the time.
Notice the neon palm trees and well….Scott Chandler.
I am sure to you young readers out there, these styles seem totally ridiculous, and they are. However, to those of us that rooted just as hard back then for these Denver Broncos as we will be next Sunday, they were as cool as the other side of the pillow.
