The Cleveland Browns were doubtlessly cheering for the Patriots to topple the Broncos last Sunday. The sooner the Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs the sooner Cleveland could seriously interview the top prospect for their vacant head coaching position, Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase. But, alas the Broncos were victorious, forcing the Browns to wait two more weeks to bring in their man.

Then a funny thing happened.

It has been reported this morning that Gase has told the Browns to omit his name from their coaching search. Gase made the wise choice to commit to his current situation for now – through the Super Bowl and beyond.

This was the best move for a couple of reasons. One, the Browns are a miserable franchise with an owner embroiled in a nasty legal fight that could result in his serving time. Two, Gase’s stock can only rise by sticking by Peyton Manning’s side.

Gase, who has held a number of assistant positions with the Lions, 49ers and Broncos, has only been a coordinator for one season. When Mike McCoy left to become the head coach of the Chargers Gase was elevated from quarterbacks coach to coordinator. Prior to that he had coached the wide receiving corps. His resume is relatively thin despite the success he has had in Denver. Add a Lombardi Trophy to that resume, though, followed by another season with Manning (and possibly another championship) and Gase becomes a prospect desirable enough for consideration from franchises without the troubles Cleveland has.

Much has been written lately about Adam Gase. Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback article last week titled “Welcome to New York” detailed ways in which Peyton Manning and Adam Gase share ideas all day and well into the night using text messages and voice messaging. They collaborate and create.

Gase realizes that his mission in Denver is not complete and that his success is tied to Manning’s. He could probably have the job in Cleveland is he wanted it. He was the leading candidate by all accounts. But Gase is investing in the long view and he knows that Denver and Cleveland are worlds apart in terms of offering championship level opportunities.

The way things are shaping up Denver’s coaching staff is likely to retain both its offensive and defensive coordinators and return at full strength for another Super Bowl run in 2014.
