A wheel has come loose on the Rockies bandwagon and the upcoming home stand is a giant looming pothole.
The Rockies face two division rivals, each of which has inched ahead of them in the standings, in a series of seven straight home games over seven straight days. Four of these tilts are versus the Giants and three against the Diamond Backs of Arizona.
This can work out one of two ways. The Rockies can emerge victorious in these series and gain back ground, or they can lose and see their hopes of remaining among the contenders in the NL West vaporize like a chili covered Rocky Dog in the hands of my friend Chris Snyder (the dude can pack them away).
As early as these two series arrive in the season, their outcomes are rather crucial as far as fan support is concerned. Perception of the Rockies is getting shaky. Folks are beginning to wonder if they were duped by the clubs success back in April. They want to believe that the Rockies will compete moving forward, but at the same time they realize that they could just as easily have the wheels fly off, leaving the bandwagon to be dragged down the road (to 100) on its axles.
‘Twas not hard to get excited about the Rockies when they were winning twice as many games as they lost. The trend has reversed, however. They are now losing two for every one they win – or at least that was the case against the Rays, Yankees, Cardinals and Cubs. In four straight series the Rockies have been a bummer to watch. Luckily, they’re coming home for a weeks worth of tilts at Coors Field. They have the chance to show the fans that they’re still on a journey, not just taking them for a ride.
