Can we end this obsession with athletes’ significant others, please?
“Are there not enough swimsuit models, porn stars and other women that voluntarily place themselves as sex symbols to entertain the masses?”

Are there not enough actual sports topics anymore that we as a nation have resorted to obsessing about players’ wives, girlfriends and hook-ups?
Katherine Webb, the girlfriend of former Alabama quarterback and Bengals rookie was just another fan in the stands during the BCS Championship Game when Brent Musburger’s incessant oogling catapulted her to stardom. Being the hot girlfriend of an athlete has now opened many doors for her including swimsuit model and television host. And she certainly wasn’t the first.
There are websites now devoted solely to the WAG’s (wives and girlfriends) of professional and college athletes and several big time sports sites have their own WAG divisions.
While I understand that fawning over beautiful women is certainly not a new concept, this new fixation on players’ significant others is somewhat puzzling to me. Are there not enough swimsuit models, porn stars and other women that voluntarily place themselves as sex symbols to entertain the masses? Why must we now fixate on these young women who are going about their lives supporting their boyfriends or husbands on the field, court or ice?
I have somewhat quietly been annoyed by this for a while now until I saw a tweet with a link the other day that just pushed me over the edge. It was something to the effect of “The hot women of the World Cup Men”. Sigh.
Really? We’re doing this for the World Cup now, too? I am certainly not a huge feminist, as it is tough to be in the sports business. I can appreciate an attractive female as much as the next guy, well maybe not as much, but I do understand how the male psyche operates. However, these countless articles and photos of athletes’ significant others has gotten way out of hand.
This may not be a popular opinion among men however; I would hope that those who actually value sports and follow them for what goes on during the game, match, etc would like to see this trend go away as well.
As a sports fan I want to talk about the players themselves, and couldn’t care less about what their wives are wearing, doing or eating for breakfast.
