Move over Nick the Sea Lion, there’s a new gimmicky animal predicting game outcomes and this time on a global scale. A loggerhead turtle named Cabeção (meaning big head) in Portuguese, predicted Brazil to edge out Croatia in the opening game of the World Cup.
Instead of Drew Soicher’s tired shtick of tossing out footballs or in this case soccer balls, the turtle had the choice of eating a fish hung from a Brazilian flag or one from their opponent Croatia’s flag. To cover all bases a fish was even placed between the two to account for a draw.
This is not the first time an animal has been used to predict the outcomes of soccer matches. In 2010, Paul the Octopus successfully called 11 out of 13 World Cup games including the final match between Spain and the Netherlands and had been predicting soccer matches since Euro 2008.
So far Cabeção has only predicted the one game but we will be anxiously awaiting the results of the rest of the field. But probably not.
