Over the course of the past year or so, Atlanta Falcon wide receiver Roddy White has been officially knocked off my holiday card list.
Those of you that follow me on twitter are probably painfully aware of my struggle with him this past year in fantasy football and how his injury and lack of play crushed my very soul week after week of the 2013 football season.
Just as I was starting to ease up a bit and make peace with White- in my mind of course, he went and did something to land right back in the dog house.
Before the start of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, White had this little twitter discussion with a fan about the outcome of the Duke versus Mercer first round game.
We all know the outcome of that major upset and now White has decided to welch on the bet.
Seriously? How much can season tickets run, $1600 – $2000? That’s like a venti mocha latte at Starbucks for the rest of us. The guy is taking in $6.4 million in this last remaining year of his contract and can certainly make good on something he put out there into the universe.
It’s almost like he is going out of his way to be a jerk. White is missing out on some serious positive publicity for both himself and the Falcons franchise by bailing. If he were to honor his promise, this legitimate Falcon fan, Dylan Hoyt, would be parked in those seats every single home game. They could pan the camera to him after great White plays (if there are any next season) and talk about what a great guy Roddy White is for making this guy’s dreams come true each and every week for the entire 2014 season. That’s pure PR gold.
Instead, you get a total failure on White’s part.
After the debacle that was last season, there was no possible way that I was going to invest my heart and mind in another season with Roddy White on my fantasy football team. Of course, we have all said that before and then somehow either due to panic or desperation, find ourselves drafting that very same person we vowed forever against to our actual team.
However, after this last bet welching, I can guarantee that Roddy White will not be on any of my rosters. I was raised to never ever skip out on a bet or your word. Sure, there have been many times I have wanted to, but will always own up to it.
Apparently, White is just fine with the notion, so he is no longer cool with me.
