The Monday Mommy: A Degenerate’s Guide to Life After Fantasy Football

South Stands Denver | December 16, 2013

“Reentering the non-fantasy football world can be difficult for some. How do you spend your free time if not scouring the start sit lists or listening to podcasts for the best lineup advice?  What is there to do early Sunday mornings if I can’t tinker with my lineup and make poor coaching decisions? “

You’ve experienced the agony and heartbreak of either not making the playoffs at all, or getting bounced early in the fantasy postseason.  Now what?

Lucky for me, I do not have to deal with this issue yet; however I know there are many of you out there that unfortunately do.  You’ve poured your heart and soul into the fantasy football season, did the research, combed the waiver wire and due to either injuries or maybe some possible over coaching are now on the sidelines while others battle it out for the elusive championship trophy.

Feeling a bit sad, frustrated, snarky and revengeful?  I get it.

Reentering the non-fantasy football world can be difficult for some. How do you spend your free time if not scouring the start sit lists or listening to podcasts for the best lineup advice?  What is there to do early Sunday mornings if I can’t tinker with my lineup and make poor coaching decisions?

There is no simple answer or solution to one of winter’s biggest challenges.  I can only offer you some guidance to easing the pain and suggest ways to occupy your time since nobody really has anything else to do this time of year, right?

Trying to fill the enormous hole left by fantasy football may be attempted by playing other fake sport games.  Both hockey and basketball leagues are happening right now, and can provide a small bit of comfort.  Since the season has already begun, you might want to try some daily leagues to get the feet wet and acclimate to the rigorous lineup schedule of the two sports.  Going from a mostly Sunday game schedule to having lineups due every night can be a tough transition for some.

Baseball season is still far enough away that you could spend the time previously relegated to football, researching and getting prepped for MLB fantasy. As I even typed that I got a little wave of nausea- fantasy baseball is not acceptable as a substitute for football.

There is of course a decent temporary solution that can tide you over for a little while: the daily and redraft football leagues.  This concept is the wave of the future in fantasy sports, steadily gaining popularity among fake sport players. Daily sites like Draft Kings offer many game variations that are sure to wet that fantasy whistle for just a bit longer, or until the inevitable happens;  the end of football season.

Of course, we could all spend more time with family or friends, perhaps volunteer to help with a charity or even sit down and read a book.  Or we can just attempt to enjoy the end of the NFL season, then block it out until it is acceptable to obsess about it all over again, like say…June-ish?
