The “M” might as well stand for “Manning”

As the Broncos set forth to tackle the final quarter of the 2013 regular season the road ahead of them could not be paved much more smoothly. A quartet of sub par AFC teams rounds out Denver’s schedule: Tennessee, San Diego, Houston and Oakland. While the Titans and Chargers could conceivably give the Broncos a measure of competition it’s likely that the blue and orange will be favored by double digits in each of these last four games.

That means more wins – and more touchdowns for one Peyton Manning, the number one with a bullet candidate for NFL MVP. The “M” might as well stand for “Manning”.

Last season Adrian Peterson, who returned from a torn ACL to deliver a 2,000 yard season, secured the MVP while Manning was forced to settle for “Comeback Player of the Year”. This season there’s no player within shouting distance of Peyton in MVP odds. Vegas lists #18 at 4/11 to take home the award. The next closest candidate is Drew Brees at 3/1 followed by Cam Newton at 12/1. Manning would have to suffer an historic performance collapse in order to miss out of his trophy this time.

This will be the fourth season after which Manning has been named MVP. He earned the honor in 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009. For as many times as he has been the league’s most important player, though, he’s won the Super Bowl only once.

MVP is an award given to the best player in the regular season. For the 2013 season to be looked back on as a successful one either by Manning or by the team that pays his salary the quarterback must enjoy success in the post-season. He must, in fact, win it all. That’s why he is here and that’s what he is paid to do. The Associated Press may very well see him as the league’s most valuable player but if he doesn’t reach the ultimate goal this season will be remembered as something of a disaster.
