The wait is almost over. The AFC West tilt that the entire Broncos’ season has been building toward thus far kicks off at long last just after 6:30 Mountain time. Big questions are soon to be answered.
Are the Chiefs really a “fraud” as Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla asserted this week – or are they a team that should be considered to be a serious Super Bowl contender?
Are the Broncos as untouchable as we have all assumed? Is Peyton Manning injured?
Who will win the AFC West?
To start let’s assume that Manning is going to play – and play well this evening. The Broncos could potentially win without Peyton, but his absence would be a game-changer … literally. All signs point to his starting so it’s on that basis that I will prognosticate. But Manning is not the key today.
Denver defense has been hearing all season about how spectacularly the Chiefs are playing. Today the Blue and Orange will dominate on the defensive side of the ball – setting a tone for the remainder of the season. Alex Smith will be pressured into making mistakes. Smith will throw two interceptions tonight. Those picks will only account for half of KC’s four turnovers, though.
A game that all NFL fans are expecting to be a great one – one that NBC flexed into prime time – will be a blowout. The only fans being entertained will be Denver fans. Sorry, NBC.
Of Kansas City’s 17 total points, 10 will be scored in garbage time.
Brock Osweiler will play almost the entire fourth quarter for the Broncos.
At the half Denver will lead 31-7. They’ll amass only ten more points in the second half for a total of 41.
In the first half the Chiefs will be reminded that they are the Chiefs. Denver will lock down Jamaal Charles, allowing him to total under 40 first-half yards. The Broncos will force KC to throw by jumping out to an immediate lead. Alex Smith will lose him composure and fail to be the “game manager” that the Chiefs rely on him to be.
The massive gap in talent between KC and Denver will be plain to see.
