“It’s only preseason.” – This is a diatribe heard repeatedly over the past two weeks as the Broncos have struggled mightily in games against the ‘Niners and the Seahawks. It’s been the anthem of experts and fans alike. Still, a pair of milk toast offensive performances mixed with harsh news regarding Von Miller has caused the tenor surrounding the Denver Broncos to be bleak. All that can change very quickly, though, should the Broncos perform well in their “dress rehearsal” game versus the Rams on Saturday night.
Fans are breathlessly awaiting news of something positive coming out of the Broncos’ camp. Peyton Manning and his shiver of offensive weapons can provide it. Starters are expected to play three quarters of Saturday’s game. That’s plenty of time to show their polish. With new Adam Gase schemes in place and an offensive pace that’s considered to be far faster this year, the Broncos should provide plenty of fireworks. On Saturday they can show that the other two preseason games really were every bit as meaningless as folks hoped they were.
The New England Patriots shines very brightly in their first two preseason performances; yet, last night against the Detroit Lions they were able to muster only nine points in a game in which the vaunted Tom Brady offense appeared to be completely inept. That preseason game flipped the script for the Patriots – but in the wrong direction. It would be fantastic to see the Broncos move in the other direction and, at the same time, speed past the Pats, right back into the position of being looked at as the top team in the AFC.
Yes, the preseason is meaningless. But it’s only because the outcomes of the games don’t count. There is still plenty to be observed – which is why the preseason is played. Where the Broncos are concerned the big concerns are the play off the linebackers with Miller not in the fold, the performance of the offensive line and the effectiveness of the running backs, who have looked pretty crummy in the early going.
The Broncos have a chance to turn a lot of frowns upside-down and ease the fears of their fan base simply by showing up and looking like the Broncos folks expect them to be. Saturday’s tilt with the Rams is one more meaningless preseason game – but it could mean a lot to a team that has been buried in negativity.
