Can you smell what the Brock is cookin’?

Yes, we have Peyton Manning. Until old number 18 decides that he’s ready to ride off into the sunset (to be fitted for a gold jacket) he will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Let there be no doubt about that. But, once Manning does decide that he’s had enough, Brock Osweiler will be waiting under his wing.

Osweiler, who was chums with John Elway’s son Jack at Arizona State University, was selected by the Broncos with the 57th overall pick in the 2012 draft. He was brought in to one day be the starter for the Broncos. He has a fabulously rare opportunity to spend a few years as the understudy to a legend before trotting out as the heir apparent. For Broncos fans it is almost as exciting to watch Osweiler develop in training camp as it is to see Peyton Manning round back into his pre-neck surgery form. While Manning represents the near future and conjures Super Bowl aspirations, Osweiler represents the next decade-plus of Broncos football.

By all reports Osweiler remains unrefined – a raw material with which to build for the future. He is, however, according to Mike Klis, the most improved Broncos player from 2012 to 2013. Andrew Mason of DenverBroncos.com is also singing Osweiler’s praises. In an article posted at the site last night Mason wrote, “He’s less tentative in the pocket, even though that means sometimes tucking the ball under his arm and running upfield. He’s better able to read a pass rush and know when to stay and go deep, and when to bounce outside.”

Brock is an enormous kid. Standing 6’8” he towers over almost every starting NFL quarterback. He’s like Big Ben but bigger. In fact, the quarterback considered sticking with basketball at one time. His does not fit the current NFL model at his position – which is one thing fans find interesting about him. Assuming Osweiler does one day become the Broncos’ starter Denver will have an interesting specimen. Brock is somebody fans have taken a shine to and, even though they love Manning, cannot wait to see start someday.

Osweiler’s situation most closely mirrors that of Aaron Rodgers, the star QB of the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers, too, sat a few years behind a legend. When Brett Favre finally left the Packers, Rodgers emerged from the HOF’er’s shadow and is now well on his way to an even more sterling career than Favre had. If this were to be Osweiler’s fate it would be wonderful news for Broncos Country where we have waited since Elway for stability at quarterback.

While Peyton Manning is the straw that serves the drink today, what the Brock may be cooking is something Broncos fans can really sink their teeth into – a brand new franchise quarterback.
