And then there was one: Mike Klis is all that’s left on the D.P. Broncos beat

The Broncos are in camp and expectations are sky high. The competition on the practice field is mirrored in the competition among the assembled media to report the goings on at Dove Valley. More agencies than ever are covering the team, dispatching reporters to write mostly for the internet.
ESPN has upped its commitment to covering all 32 NFL teams, hiring newspaper beat writers from across the country to provide individual team reporting. Among the beat writers the four-letter network has added is Jeff Legwold, formerly of the Denver Post. Legwold’s departure from the daily was announced on Monday and it leaves the paper with only Mike Klis formally assigned to cover the Denver Broncos. Hockey and basketball scribes are pitching in to help, but the Post finds its self short handed at the worst possible time.
Entering Broncos training camp in 2012 the Post had three full-time Broncos writers, Legwold, Klis and Lindsay Jones-Paul, who joined the USA Today staff last year. For the paper to be so thinly represented during “Dove Valley days” is shocking, particularly in light of the increasing validity of internet sports pages. The Post being undermanned would seem to demonstrate that its hold on readers is fading.
This week the paper will platoon writers in order to get camp stories. Chris Dempsey, the Nuggets beat writer, will be helping cover camp along with Adrian Dater and Terry Frei, each of whom primarily write about the Avalanche. An effort is apparently under way to replace Legwold. It’s somewhat doubtful, though, that the Post will add a third reporter specifically for Broncos coverage.
As a fan of the Denver Post and as a person who loves to read the sports section, I hope they replace him soon. The folks at It’s All Over Fat Man, a wonderful Broncos site, recommend Andrew Mason of Max Denver and DenverBroncos.com. I back that recommendation 100%.
