Sports have always been a huge part of my life. I was the only girl on my little league soccer team at age three. I was also the one chick hanging with the guys every weekend watching football while all my girl friends were shopping and sleeping in during my college years.
Unlike many of my friends who would bitch about their respective boyfriends bailing on plans in order to watch a game, I obviously never complained, in fact gravitated towards the men who shared the same passion for sports as I did.
Never in a gazillion years did I think it would come back to bite me in the ass. But it did.
I married a man who works in sports television.
I know what you’re probably thinking: But you get incredible perks, right? Yes there are some advantages to having a husband that works for an all sports television station. However, it certainly has its share of cons as well.
First I will address the negatives, as they have the most impact on my families’ life. The word “plans” has zero relevance in my life. Depending on the season, sports-wise, we can basically plan for nothing as a family. No holiday bar-b-cues, no weekend get a ways, nothing. Now, before you break out the tiny violins, I am not saying we are unable to do anything, ever. We just can’t plan for it, as it may get pulled out from under us by a last minute press conference. Traditional Holidays celebrated by most people usually involve us celebrating on a different day or myself having to go to that party without the husband. That yummy Thanksgiving dinner that everyone looks forward to every year? It is usually eaten on the following Friday. The annual family fireworks game at Coors Field? Nope, he’s working.
As exciting as it is to hear of a new coaching hire or someone being let go by a particular organization, our first thought is, “ well, we can’t do ____ anymore because there will be a press conference”.
As the mother of a four-year old, I am pretty over doing the bed time routine as a solo act for approximately six months out of the year. You see, in television the production crew works whether the game is at home or away, in other words, practically every single day of the season. While I hate to compare myself to a single mother because technically I am not, being married to a guy who works in sports television can sure make a gal feel that way at times. Let’s just say my son and I have had our fair share of bonding time over the past four years.
I’m sure you are thinking, there has to be some phenomenal advantages for a sports fan like me to be married to a guy in this field, right? While there are not as many as one would imagine, the job does come with a few positives.
Firstly, he does get his share of free tickets. While tickets are an incredible perk, the catch is that my son and I get to go without him, because of course; he has to actually work during the game. Luckily, my boy loves any outing to Pepsi Center at this point and doesn’t seem fazed that we always go without his daddy.
Another great perk for me as a sports journalist is getting the scoop on team news before the public. While professionally, I can’t do anything with the information; it is still fun to know about certain moves to the players and staff before the general public.
As Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer is in the rearview mirror and people start to plan their vacations, parties and road trips, take a moment to think about those of us that are less fortunate. Think about the folks that make your beloved sporting events happen.
Realize that for a four-hour sporting event, the crew is usually putting in a 10 hour day to pull it off. Remember their spouses, sacrificing that annual corn-hole tournament and beach vacation in order to have a successful broadcast.
Pour out a few drops of your adult beverage for the men and women that make your favorite pastimes a reality. While you’re at it, thank their spouses too, because at times, being married to someone who works in sports television can really suck.
