Regarding the 2013 Colorado Rockies there’s good news and there’s bad news.
Let’s start with the bad news. The Padres, who the Rox have already toppled six times in two series sweeps, aren’t on the schedule every night.
The good news? Neither are the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
How bad are the Rockies? Not as bad as San Diego apparently. How good are they? Not as good as the Giants. From the looks of things they are somewhere in the middle – which is better than folks though they would be. It’s early still, but Colorado is ranked right in the middle of the NL West, tied with the Diamondbacks at 8-4, trailing the Giants and barely ahead of the Dodgers. Few would make the case that a finish in that range would be a disappointment for a club thought to be one of baseballs worst prior to first pitch on opening day.
The Rockies have been fun to watch as promised. Offensively they can hang with any club in the NL. Their pitching has been better than expected, though, and that is a cause to feel somewhat optimistic. A Wild Card is not outside the spectrum of realistic expectations, at least it seems that way. Time will tell, of course. They’ll have to stay extraordinarily healthy if that is to happen. The Rockies can’t afford to have key players miss extended time, especially not starting pitchers.
They’re settling in for ten straight games at Coors Field, beginning with four straight games against the Mets, as many as three of which could wind up being played on the same day. A wintery storm is rolling in that could force a condensed schedule. With the Mets, the Diamond Backs and the Braves on the near horizon, there’s no reason the Rockies can’t continue winning twice as many games as they lose, going 6-4 or 7-3 in the home stand. Assuming they do, they will be off to a fine start. Could anybody have imagined this team being 15-7 after 22 games?
The Rockies won’t face another monster until they travel to LA to play the Dodgers at the end of the month. If they can hold their own in that series we might be able to say that we have something in this club. Meanwhile, they’ll be expected to do a lot of winning in April which is pretty exciting.
