Magical Rockies lose 100 games in one afternoon

To the casual viewer, yesterday’s extra-inning one-run opening day Rockies loss on the road in Milwaukee’s ballpark might have presented some signs of encouragement. Jhoulys Chacin earned a quality start, working into the seventh and allowing only one run on three hits. Dexter Fowler produced three hits in five at-bats. He, Cargo and Tulo all swatted homers and, up until the late innings, the Rockies played quality defense.

To more knowledgeable observers, however, the wheels fell off. By losing 5-4 to the Brewers the Rockies coughed up 100 games in one afternoon. Men who are paid to observe the local teams on somehow saw nothing Rockies fans could hang their official New Era fitted team caps on. The impression one would get listening to the sports radio stations this morning is that the ball club is doomed to repeat the futility of 2012.

The Nuggets have been pretty quiet lately, and the Broncos still haven’t signed a defensive end. There is therefore little else for the sports yappers to do but mug the Rockies. The fact of the matter is, despite Lopez’ dismal showing in relief, Colorado played one heck of a game in their road opener and gave the Brewers a scare. Chacin, who struggled in Spring ball, contributed a quality start and showed that the Rockies’ pitching situation may not be quite as dismal as everybody thought.

As formidable as the Rockies offense can be, they games without a wonderful pitching staff. That’s how the team is constructed. What was witnessed yesterday afternoon was discouraging in that Chacin’s solid effort ultimately was wasted in a loss. There was also plenty to be excited about, however.

One loss does not 100 losses make. There’s always tomorrow – or in this case tonight. Somehow having a sense of optimism about the Colorado Rockies is seen as foolish by many. For others, it’s just baseball.
