The Rockies are a comedy. Not of errors, just a comedy.

The unintentional comedy that is the Colorado Rockies was just renewed for another season.
And what a season it will be: full of action, laughs and eventually tears. With the hire of Walt Weiss as manager, the team didn’t exactly swing and miss with its choice, but the pratfall was there anyway with how long they signed him for.
The one year deal slid across the table to Weiss had to be thrilling for him: while a pretty damn good player in his days with the Rockies, he was recently a high school baseball coach and had to be happy to have made it back to the majors this way. But for the fans, a one year deal is strange considering Jim Tracy’s “hand shake” life time contract a year ago and the Monforts refusal to out right fire ANYONE. What did Weiss do (or not do) to earn the mistrust of the Rockies?
But never fear Rockies fans. The ineptitude we’ve come to know and love from the Monforts hasn’t gone anywhere. A one year deal for Weiss is basically admitting they realize they’ve hired a high school coach and if things go further into the toilet for the team, they can cut ties with him quickly and eat the remainder of the money on his paltry contract. It’s smart for the Monforts, but more of the same for Rockies fans who’ve been beaten over the head with one bad decision after another that never seems to pan out.
And it was smart for Weiss, because no one expects him to do well with a team that lost 98 games last season and well, he works for the Monforts. And if Weiss does well in his first couple of months as manager, it will be even worse. Dan O’Dowd, thrilled that his job is safe for another five years will urge the Monforts to pony up for an extension for Weiss who will then promptly turn into Jim Tracy. It’s like foregoing the damage protection on your iPhone and promptly dropping it in the parking lot.
We wish Weiss all the luck in his new position with the Colorado Rockies. I’m sure it’s a dream come true for him and if he’s half the manager as he was a ball player, he’ll do fine. The problem is the fact that the Rockies are completely awful and Dan O’Dowd won’t even let the guy pick his own assistants, let alone having a pitcher go over 75 pitches. Which will all make for a very long season of unintentional comedy: for Weiss, the players and us the fans.
