Get your CURL ON….soon
If you can’t talk hockey on the radio, how about Curling? Plans to open a Curling only facility are sliding right along…..
It may literally be the last thing you’re thinking about right now. But in this sweltering summer heat we’re experiencing in Colorado, wouldn’t it be nice to go hang out on a sheet of ice and slide some heavy objects toward a target?
Yes, yes it would. And that is curling: the large scale shuffleboard on ice that is also an Olympic sport.
I went and tried curling the night the Broncos drafted Tim Tebow and enjoyed every minute of it. I wanted to do more, but the place The Denver Curling Club currently applies their trade was not a full-time dedicated curling facility and ice time was scarce. Let alone that trying to convince several of my friends to invest in Canada’s other pastime was going to be a tough sell.
But now that may change with the announcement of The Denver Curling Center is scheduled to break ground in 2013 on a 20,000 square foot building in west Denver. When it opens in 2014, the Denver Curling Center will feature an Olympic caliber facility dedicated to nothing but sliding those stones down the ice.
It’s really a fun sport and this may offer people a chance to play more often which of course will lead to gold medals in some far off winter Olympics. And since curling would probably offer my only chance at winning a gold medal, cooling off with a broom in my hand sounds even better.
