The Year of the Fan just keeps on rolling

They don’t want anyone to ruin their perfect little utopia they’ve created down at 20th and Blake, even as the hairline cracks in that façade are turning into mammoth fissures.

As if you needed another reason to sour on the Rockies even further, the team pulls a switcheroo on its Saturday game that leaves thousands scratching their heads. It almost seems trite to complain about the Rockies at this point, and that’s probably how they’d prefer it. But like trying to get a dog to stop pooping on the floor, the damage is done. Why bother?

But the Rockies really put a burr under my saddle the other day when I dragged a car load of kids down to Coors Field for a 2 pm game that they apparently changed without really alerting anyone. As a season ticket holder, neither I nor my family was alerted to the change and I headed down to give the Monfarts even more of my money. Looking around, and not seeing any of the usual street corner entrepreneurs hawking water and peanuts, I realized something was up. I checked my tickets a few more times to make sure I had the right day, and after making a phone call, my suspicions were confirmed: the game had indeed been rescheduled for 6 pm.

Well, thanks a lot Rockies. I turned around and headed home. No way was I carting a gaggle of kids around LoDo for four hours while we waited. I fumed and took to Twitter to express my dissatisfaction. It may seem petty and a bit childish to be upset as I was. But the Rockies have done nothing but shit on a plate, call it chocolate ice cream and charge us $6.50 for it all season long. For a team facing a massive PR problem with its shoddy management and losing ways, this was just one more example of the decaying relationship with the fans and the hilarious irony that is the Year of the Fan.

As someone who is an avid Twitter user, I never saw the announcement of the time change. So how else were the Rockies planning on getting this information out there? As I said, no one I knew involved in our season tickets was alerted via email or phone call. It was a Saturday after all and if you didn’t happen to be glued to Twitter, you too would have headed down at the wrong time. I actually was on Twitter in the morning and never saw it. Or maybe I’ve just tuned out the sunshine and puppies @Rockies is cramming up our asses.

I can almost forgive the bad baseball. That happens to even the best teams. We know the Monfarts have a big decision to make at the end of this season regarding Dan O’Dowd. And they will either confirm or assuage our fears with the route they take with the GM. But management has handled themselves less than gracefully by alienating the Denver Post and turning out fans that put bags over their heads. This was supposed to be the Year of the Fan, but it should be called Year of the Scam because I still had to drag the car load of kids down there at 6 pm and shell out nearly $60 in cokes, hot dogs and dipping dots in a two hour span. I didn’t have to go back down there, but I made a promise no matter how bitter I was at the time. The Rockies made a promise too, but like most things with the team, they always end in stark disappointment.
