The Rockies are starting to look a little like the Rockies
During Monday’s double header sweep of the Astros the Rockies played precisely the way we were expecting them to.
Memorial Day 2012 really could not have been more perfect. The sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky yet it was never really hot out. The temperature hovered around 80 almost the entire day.
Topping it all off was the Rockies winning two games over Astros in a day-night double header attended by nearly 70,000 fans.
I had a half of an eye on the games whilst hosting a small barbecue. What I saw as I checked in was the Rockies offense taking charge and helping the team overcome its spotty pitching.
That’s exactly was I was expecting to see this season.
Everyone knew that the pitching staff was going to be horrible. I can’t remember a single pundit lauding its potential for the 2012 season. Everybody knew that the Rockies would allow runs.
Folks also expected them to score runs. That’s what’s been missing.
On Monday the Rockies took the first game 9-7 and the second 7-6. Those are the types of scores they can win with.
These guys aren’t going to win close, low-scoring games. They are going to allow many runs. The objective needs to be to score more than the opponent does on a game to game basis. In order to do that the Rockies are going to need consistent offensive production.
Let’s all hope that Mondays games were indicative of what we can expect from the Rockies going foward. I can’t shake the feeling that they are poised to go on a streak.
