In handing the New Jersey Nets 123-115 last night, your Denver Nuggets set the high water mark for the NBA season with 37 assists, 12 of them dished by reserve point gaurd, veteran Andre Miller. Ironically, it’s Miller who’s “me, me, me” mentality may be a blemish on the Nuggets season – but we’ll save that topic for another post.
The point of this one is to highlight the unselfishness of this team. George Karl must smile himself to sleep at night. As long as he has coached in the NBA he has taught the type of play this this truly International group of athletes is demonstrating.
The Nuggets are second in the league behind the Miami Heat in points-per-game at 103.64, over 2 points ahead of the Spurs, and they are sharing the ball. Only one Nugget is among the top 20 scorers on a points-per-game basis, however. Danilo Gallinari is precisely 20th with 17.2 points per game. The next closest is Ty Lawson, clear down at 28th.
Denver leads in the NBA in assists per game, yet only two Nuggets are in the top 20 among assist leaders. Are the Nuggets deep? Oh, yes. They most certainly are.
