Faxgate has the makings of an all-time epic fail
Apparently, Elvis has left the building after all.
Here’s what we know:
Elvis Dumervil’s agent and the Denver Broncos front office agreed that Elvis would take a reduction in pay from 12M per year to 8M per year.
The contract was not recieved by the Broncos by the witching hour of 2pm MST, 4 PM EST. The Broncos were therefore forced to release Dumervile in order to avoid being bound to the original 12M.
As a result of releasing Doom, the Broncos are now on the hook for a $4M hit against the salary cap.
That means that, even if he signs for the agreed-upon 8M, the total cap hit will remain the original 12M. It also means that Dumervile is now a free agent.
Is the whole thing indeed a huge error – or did Dumervil’s agent make a conscious decision to stick it to the Broncos by dragging his feet?
The facts will continue to trickle out. Regardless of the particulars, this goofy situation casts a dark shadow over an otherwise sterling signing period for the Broncos.
What a mess.
