Alex Smith is prolly coming to the AFC West

Former 49ers starting QB Alex Smith is probably having a pretty shitty week. His team made it to the big game, but without him under center. Smith must keep his chin up, field questions from the assembled media and generally act like a pro even though deep down he’s pissed. Real pissed.

Despite leading the Niners to the AFC Championship game last season, his coach Jim Harbaugh decided that Smith’s understudy, the versatile Colin Kaepernick, gave San Francisco the best chance to win a championship in 2012 / 2013. Smith was handed a clipboard mid-season. He’s been helpful toward Kaepernick according to reports, but Smith wants out. He wants to be a started again and he will demand his release as soon as this season is through.

The rumor machine in Kansas City is currently running at max capacity. The speculation there is that Alex Smith will join Andy Reid in trying to restore the Chiefs. Reading the Chiefs blogs, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Smith is Kansas City bound.

The Chiefs currently lack a quarterback capable of carrying the water. Aside from one decent game played by Brady Quinn, the play the Chiefs got at the quarterback position in 2012 was dismal – the worst in the NFL. There’s truly nowhere for the Chiefs to go but up – and, with a dirge of QBs in the upcoming rookie class, Kansas City’s lofty position in the draft is unlikely to help. Smith offers the team a veteran alternative to a shaky rookie QB. He also offers stability.

It would be surprising if Alex Smith didn’t have an arrowhead on his helmet next season.
