The Broncos need to get Gronk’d

South Stands Denver | December 20, 2011

Our friend in Florida, Tori Toney, is back this week with another fantastic post for the South Stands.  This time she weighs in on why the Broncos need a big, badass tight end like the Pats have.

Yes, the Broncos lost to New England. I should probably feel worse about it than I do.  Sunday’s game was promising for the most part, yet it demonstrated a couple of things 1) ball security needs SERIOUS improvement and 2) the Broncos need their own Rob Gronkowski.

Now I understand, it’s Bill Belichick, it’s Tom Brady, it’s the great New England Patriots…but have you seen this guy play?  He’s ridiculous. At 6’6″, 265 lbs. he’s built like Babe the Big Blue Ox, only he’s probably harder to wrestle to the ground.  He has become Tom Brady’s favorite target.  That is what the Broncos need, they need a big bodied, big boned Tight End for Tebow to have his way with.  A guy that can carry two guys on his back for 10 yards before being taken down!  How exciting would that be to see again?!

I like the Broncos’ wide outs but they seem so fragile, every part of that offense aside from Tebow and the O-line are weak. They seem small, thin and fragile (aside from Demaryius Thomas but he is hurt often). The tight ends are none existent. I think that for Tebow to continue to develop as a passer (like we all saw on Sunday), the tight ends need to become a bigger factor. We need them to be big, strong and tough. They need to be out there every down bangin’ into the defense and fighting for yards.  A good, strong tight end like Rob Gronkowski can make all the difference on this team.   A player like that will ease the need for star players in other positions. The Broncos wouldn’t need to have a star running back, just a decent one to maintain the pace of the game.

Just look at when Tim was at Florida…one of his favorite targets to pass to?  Aaron Hernandez, the other beast in the 1-2 Tight End punch of the Patriots offense.  Can you name a running back off of the Florida team when they were there?  No?  I didn’t think so.

John Elway needs to see that he has a guy he can build around, instead of using valuable picks for things the team doesn’t need (like a starting rookie quarterback) they need to be used for building the team to fit Tebows strengths.  Draft a rookie tight end.  A middle rounder should fit, but he’s got to be big with great hands. Big is the factor here, 6’4″ and above.  Grab him up, allow for the development between him and Tebow to grow, and magical things would happen. I guarantee it.
